Cooley Law School has been fully approved by the ABA since its first class graduated. Provisional approval was granted in 1975; full approval was granted in 1978.

The ABA also granted acquiescence to Cooley in 2006 to establish full J.D. branch programs at both its Oakland and Grand Rapids locations. Acquiescence is effective after July 31, 2006.
