Aimee Lorencz: Cooley Graduate Builds Career Path in Criminal Law

Recent Cooley Law School graduate Aimee Lorencz is turning years of professional experience and a passion for justice into a future career in criminal law. In a feature published by Legal News, Lorencz reflects on her journey from working as a correctional officer and CPS investigator to earning her law degree while balancing family, work, and leadership responsibilities. As a weekend/blended student, Lorencz immersed herself in hands-on learning opportunities including externships, moot court competitions, the Cooley Innocence Project, and student leadership roles. At Cooley’s Tampa campus, that shoulder belongs to Willie Damon. Damon is a campus security guard who is “the face” of the law school every time you enter the facility. He started out at Cooley during construction and has been there ever since, welcoming new students, befriending those who need a listening ear, and wishing graduates well as they move forward in life. As the father of five daughters, a son and grandfather of 12, he’s a natural when it comes to giving.

    In effect for almost a year, Michigan’s Medical Marihuana Facility Licensing Act (MMFLA) is under the auspices of the new Bureau of Medical Marihuana Regulation, which also oversees administration of the 2008-initiated Michigan’s Medical Marihuana Licensing Act. Activities delegated to the Bureau include licensing medical marihuana growing, processing, transporting, provisioning (selling,) and safety compliance.

McGhee, of Flint, Michigan, a third-year student at Cooley Law School's Auburn Hills campus, was recently chosen to attend the National Women’s Law Students Organization’s (NWLSO) inaugural Ms. JD Leadership Academy at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Described as an “initiative created to further the mission of supporting and improving the experiences of women law students,” the Academy admitted just 50 students nationwide to attend the intensive workshop in September.

"Toronto was absolutely amazing,"exclaimed Hickman. "As a global city, it really encompasses and captures the interests of professionals and students. Plus I got to spend three weeks at the lovely St. Michael's College, a location straight out of a novel." Hickman relished every moment.

January 2017’s feature is Cooley graduate Zaneta Adams, a U.S. Army Retired PFC. She served eight years in the military, including her time with the U.S. Army National Guard, the Army Reserves, and Active Duty. After being severely injured during active duty, she made it her purpose to get a legal degree and serve so her fellow brothers and sisters could get the veteran benefits they deserve.
